What is a zine? Why self-publish? What goes into a photo zine? This three-session workshop introduces participants to the zine as a form of self-publishing, with a focus on photography, sequencing, and meaning-making. Participants will learn about the history and origins of zines, examine examples of different formats, and discuss how artists have used zines to publish and distribute their work independently. Through exercises in sequencing, editing, and layout, participants will explore how to curate their own photographic archives, work with found material, or create new work intended to be experienced specifically in zine form. The workshop will also discuss printing methods and production techniques. The workshop concludes with participants sharing a rough draft/work in progress for group discussion and feedback to inspire future iterations of their zine.
