In this course we will explore the relationship between photography and collage and how the manipulation of found images can complicate photographic history and contemporary mass culture. To further examine our image based society, students will utilize a variety of techniques, including: appropriation, digital montage, physical and in camera collage. Students will engage in the practice of building their own collection of images which will be used in a final project of their choosing. We will discuss work by prominent contemporary artists who have used collage as a subversive act. This class will consist of multiple collage assignments, readings, critiques and discussions.
